This carpet tile collection draws its essence from the founding history of the city of Ottawa, established in 1826 under the name ByTown, in tribute to Lieutenant-Colonel John By. A historical figure, he oversaw the construction of the Rideau Canal in the early 19th century—a waterway that played a key role in unifying the territory and ultimately contributed to Ottawa’s designation as the national capital in 1857.
ByTown also echoes the heritage of Indigenous Peoples, whose history long predates the founding of the city. The name “Ottawa” originates from the Algonquin word “adawe”, meaning “to trade,” a reminder that this region served for centuries as a place of passage, exchange, and gathering for diverse Indigenous nations.
By naming the collection ByTown, we aimed to acknowledge both John By’s role in the city’s development and the essential influence of Indigenous cultures in shaping this land.
ByTown offers a refined selection of seven versatile colors, carefully curated to bring both a contemporary and timeless dimension to commercial interiors. “As we created ByTown, our goal was to enrich our modular carpet offering with soft yet expressive textures. Designed with a multi-level loop structure, the patterns create a rich, refined visual effect that enhances commercial interiors while respecting each space’s unique aesthetic,” explains Valérie Drouin, Product Designer at Venture Carpets.
